What actually happened to Patrice Horsley? One former member of the sheriff’s department who worked during the period of her murder is adamant that the killer had “stuffed a stick up in her. That’s what it was.” David James, who was at the murder scene the morning her body was found, also tells me that she’d been raped with a tree branch. Lamb, the current chief deputy sheriff, points out that his team has also gathered testimony that the body of another slain woman, Ethel Webster, was found nearby. “She was beaten to death with a stick and was sodomized with the same stick she was beaten with,” he says, echoing what Gibson had told me.

People around town said that Horsley had been having drug issues, so Gibson, a juvenile-detention officer at the time, wasn’t entirely surprised to see her arrive with Ronnie Estes. When Horsley walked over to greet Gibson, he could immediately tell that she was on crack. “You need to get off this stuff,” he told her, gently. “Girl, this is not you.” He also warned her, he says, about the company she was keeping. Estes, 28, had already been in trouble with the law. “You may not realize who you’re hangin’ with,” Gibson cautioned. “Boy, I know,” she answered, “but we’re just gonna ride around and drink a bit.” Patrice and Ronnie loaded a 48-pack of beer onto the back of a pickup. They pulled out of the parking lot, and Gibson watched their taillights head north on Highway 1.

There are other documents in the binder. A semen test is referenced—conducted nine months after the homicide—but the results aren’t in the file. Neither is a sexual-assault kit, which was supposed to have been sent to a lab for analysis. The file, however, does contain gruesome photos of the crime scene, and chief investigator Williams points out bite marks on one of Horsley’s breasts. Also included is a full autopsy report, but the coroner makes no mention of bites or injuries to the breasts. The report continues: “The external genitalia is essentially unremarkable,” with no cuts or lacerations identified. This runs counter to what Gibson and others say was a central element of the case: that Horsley had been sexually assaulted with part of a pecan tree.

Aside from being clever marketing, there’s also a strong message. Our city is in flux, growing at a dizzying pace and changing daily. We can either be furious, move away or maybe, just maybe, the best way forward is to look for creative, artistic solutions.
